Our club

POM is the shortcut for the registered association "Partnerschaft Oberhausen-Middlesbrough e. V." The partnership between these two towns exists since 1974. In the same year the citizens of Middlesbrough in the northeast of England founded their club MOTT (Middlesbrough-Oberhausen Town Twinning) with official support by the town.

In 1979 an engaged group of exchange students and politically active citizens of Oberhausen founded POM, backed by mayor Luise Albertz.

So POM is an association which lives the town twinning and maintains the personal relations of the citizens of both towns.

What does POM want?

  • Making and intensifying contacts on a personal level between citizens of both towns.
  • Appreciation for people who live in a similar region because both towns are in transition.
  • Intensification and strengthening of official relationships.
  • Being a partner for everybody who is interested in the town twinning.
  • Enabling a lively togetherness through common activities.
  • Getting to know the regions of both towns.

What does POM do?

Every second year POM organizes a trip to Middlesbrough for its members and their relatives. In the years between the English club visits us. The guests stay at host families. The host club organzies trips and visits into the regions, to historic sights, landscapes, museums or exhibtions. Thus the people get to know the new developments of both towns.

Of course a welcome and a farewell party are not missing before the guests go back home.

The contact between the members of town twinning is encouraged by a lot of activities. Whether it is a spring trip or an autumn walk, the club life is not restricted to the town trip. At the regulars' table our members and interested citizens get to know everything new and interesting about town twinning.
